Horticulture Projects
Current Horticulture department projects include:
All-American Selections garden, Nebraska State Wide Arboretum Site, student gardens,
and a site to study Witches Broom.
In 1997 it was started as an03/07/2006 All-American Selections garden
This garden is maintained by the Omaha Men's Garden Club.
This garden features new varieties and hybrids of flowers and vegetables that are being tested before commercial distribution.
Nebraska State Wide Aboretum Site
The college campus offers a wide collection of plants, some that have existed on the site for over 100 years. Metro is one of six sites in the metro Omaha area to be a part of the state wide aboretum system. The statewide system is dedicated to creating public awareness, fostering educational opportunities, and improving plant materials.
Horticulture students plan, plant, and maintain various gardens as class projects throughout the year.
A genetic mutation that causes dense growths or closely spaced leaves and branches that arise from a bud or cell mutation on trees, either conifer or deciduous. If these brooms can be successfully propagated there could be new dwarf plants for the nursery industry.
