ORH 101 Introduction to Horticulture 5 - 3 - 6
This course forms the basis for all the
other horticulture courses. It includes the study of structures and
functions in plants, requirements for growth and production including soil
and fertilizers, temperature, light, growth stimulants and retardants, water
use and application, propagation, and growing problems as they relate to the
production of vegetables, bedding plants, bulbs, nursery stock, potted
plants and cut flowers. Appropriate laboratory experience will be provided.

111 Tree: Culture and Identification 3 - 0 - 3
This course includes the study of
characteristics, growth rate, care and use of deciduous trees used in the
Midwest for landscaping purposes. Students will learn the proper use of
spraying and pruning equipment as they relate to trees. Prerequisite: ORH
101 or Division Chair approval.

112 Evergreens and Groundcover: Culture and Identification 3 - 0 - 3
This course includes the study and use of
both evergreen and herbaceous groundcover plants. The characteristics, use,
care and proper handling of tools as they relate to broad leafed and needled
evergreen trees and shrubs used in landscaping are taught. Prerequisite: ORH
101 or Division Chair approval.

Shrub: Culture and Identification 3 - 0 - 3
This course covers the use of shrubs in the
landscape and emphasis is placed on spraying and pruning tools and
techniques, time of flowering, size of shrub, location and various
identifying characteristics. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or Division Chair
approval.

114 Perennials: Culture and Identification 3 - 0 - 3
This course includes the study of
perennials in the landscape. There is emphasis on the following
characteristic: flower, leaf, texture, color, proper location, soil and
different times of bloom. Methods and use of equipment for propagation are
included. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or Division Chair approval.

115 Vegetable and Herb Gardening 2 - 3 - 3
Vegetable and basic culinary herb home
gardening is discussed in this course. Both theory and hands-on experience
using appropriate tools are emphasized for seedlings, transplants, soil
enhancement and pest control. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or Division Chair
approval.

121 Floral Design I 2 - 3 - 3
This course is an introduction to the art
and mechanics of arranging fresh flowers for the home and for special
occasions using modern techniques and apparatus.

122 Floral Design II 2 - 3 - 3
This is an advanced course in the art of
arranging flowers for weddings, funerals, silks and dried arrangements, etc.
Prerequisite: ORH 121 or one year experience in design work.

125 Annuals: Culture and Identification 2 - 3 - 3
This course is a comprehensive study of
annuals, bulbous plants, etc. The student is taught to identify, propagate,
use in the landscape and care for these plants by using modern techniques
and equipment. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or Division Chair approval.

Turfgrass Management 2 - 3 - 3
This course includes the laboratory and
discussion of the culture and care of turf areas including residential,
public and intense use areas. Emphasis is on the propagation, establishment,
identification, watering, fertilizing, insects, diseases and the safe use of
power tools for grasses used in Nebraska turf. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or
Division Chair approval.

205 Plant Propagation 3 - 3 - 4
This course includes laboratory and
discussion sessions dealing with methods to increase plant numbers, both
herbaceous and woody, by grafting, seeds, cuttings, tissue culture, etc.
Students are expected to practice these methods using various cutting and
grafting equipment. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or Division Chair approval.

210 Fruits: Culture and Identification 3 - 0 - 3
Characteristics, identification, care and
use of tree fruits and small fruits; establishing plantings, controlling
pests, pollination and fruit set, pruning and equipment training are
studied. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or Division Chair approval.

211 Residential Landscaping 2 - 3 - 3
This course studies all areas involved in
planning and drawing residential landscapes including the proper use of
drafting equipment. Solving landscaping problems, selling, correct placement
of proper plant material and different types of designs are covered. The
student is required to submit completed designs. Prerequisite: ORH 111, ORH
112 and ORH 113.

Advanced Landscaping 2 - 3 - 3
This course offers a supervised laboratory
in which students are required to complete landscape designs for public,
commercial or industrial sites. How to plan, sell and price a complete
landscape is taught along with a hands-on introduction to computerized
landscaping. Prerequisite: ORH 211.

221 Interiorscaping and Houseplants 3 - 3 - 4
The identification, use and culture of
plants using the latest ideas, techniques and equipment are covered for home
and commercial interiorscapes. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or Division Chair
approval.

Landscape Operations 2 - 3 - 3
The details and construction of steps,
walks, walls, fences and other landscape features and structures are
studied. Selection and proper use of materials and tools for the
construction of these features is a major part of this course along with
proper planting of nursery stock used in landscaping. Prerequisite: ORH 101
or Division Chair approval.

235 Nursery and Garden Center Operations 3 - 0 - 3
The operation of a nursery or garden center
requires a good knowledge of woody plant production, landscape contract
bidding, merchandising, marketing and garden center operations. These topics
are discussed in this course along with field production of perennials,
bulbs and groundcovers. Prerequisite: ORH 101 or Division Chair approval.

242 Greenhouse Crop Production 2 - 3 - 3
This course provides an opportunity for
students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to produce flowers and
properly handle the equipment in glass and plastic structures. Prerequisite:
ORH 101 or Division Chair approval.

245 Flower Shop Operations 3 - 0 - 3
This course covers basic flower shop
arrangement, management, equipment, supply sources and various marketing
techniques.

250 Exploring the Horticulture Industry 3 - 0 - 3
Guest lecturers from floral shops,
greenhouses, nurseries, landscape operations and turf businesses will
discuss various aspects of the horticulture industry. Students will visit
various horticulture establishments and relate their previous studies to the
day-to-day operations of the establishment. Prerequisite: Completion of at
least 21 ORH credits.

295 Special Project in Horticulture 0 - 3 - 1
The student will work with the horticulture
faculty in designing, implementing and evaluating a special horticulture
project. The student will meet with the faculty on a regular basis for
consultation and evaluation. Prerequisite: Three credit hours earned in
horticulture, be presently enrolled in a horticulture class and Instructor
approval.

296 Special Topics in Horticulture Variable
Various topics not covered in other
horticulture courses may be offered, depending upon interest and relevancy
to the curriculum. Such topics may include roses, ornamental grasses,
special gardening techniques and plans, and computer aided landscape design.

297 Internship 0 - 15 - 3
Students will work in a horticulture
related field under the direction of a qualified supervisor. Prerequisite:
Must have earned a minimum of 18 credit hours in horticulture courses and
